How I Almost Fell For A Tech Support Scam
Prior to this experience I had ran into and seen many scams, even when having a decent amount of knowledge on the topic, I had almost gotten tricked, this was during an interaction with an employee who gave me a number that was getting “Phishing” by a group of scammers. This began when I had called Amazon tech support to get help fixing an issue with my account. After speaking with a employee for a while, he stated that he was unable to help me with my issue and that I would need to contact their other support line to help resolve my issue. After calling the number I had been given, I spoke to a individual who stated he was amazon technical and could “help fix my issue”. After asking a couple non suspecting general questions he asked if I had a routing or banking account, this question astatically raised a red flag. After asking him about why he would need that information he just responded saying they were general questions he needed to ask in order to help me. There was no reason for him to need that information so I immediately hung up and called an amazon technical support supervisor and told them about my experience. Their attempt in getting my financial information was to take money from me. They almost were able to do this by pretending to be legitimate support by using a recycled number that Amazon used to use for specialized tech support. A simple way to avoid scams like this is to ask yourself, Would a real company actually need this information? If its a no, hang up.

This website put me onto websites. Before I hated them. This one has impressed me
I’m inclined to woo my fans. Have a great day
Great story, way to be smart, I could see some older folks falling for this nasty trick!
A bunch of elderly have definitely fallen victim to this, spread the word for me.
Great post! I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share of scam callers, but I had no idea that they could get a hold of old, once legitimate numbers like that. Your story was definitely a good reminder to always watch out for new scam tactics. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I’m glad you caught them in time 😉
I’m not shocked they’re trying to call you. Thanks for the comment
Solid piece. I wonder how AI will effect Phishing in the near future?
Thanks for the comment Mike. I think AI will lead to many more and even trickier scams.
